May along the Dalmatian coast is warm, with highs around 23°C and lows near 16°C, so summer clothes with a layer for breezy evenings on deck.
Small-ship and superyacht cruises hop between islands such as Hvar, Brač, Vis and Korčula, with swim stops in quiet bays and evenings ashore in harbour towns.
“My Croatia tip: on a low budget, fly to Split and hop on the cheap, regular ferries to the islands for a few nights each. They’re quick and easy from Split centre, and I’m hoping to do it myself next year. Bigger budget? I’d definitely recommend the superyacht cruise. It’s still relatively untouched and authentic, and I found the people lovely and friendly. Go in April, May or September: not too hot or busy.”
The day the yacht left without us
“I did once miss a sailing, but honestly, it wasn’t our fault! There were only eight of us on the superyacht, so you’d think someone would notice half of us were missing. Apparently not. Whilst we were taking in the beautiful views, we saw a yacht pulling away and thought, that can’t be ours. As our pace increased, so did our panic. Our lovely jaunt along the quayside became a sprint to the edge of the dock, only to watch it sail off without us, way before it was due to leave. Cue four of us shouting at it to come back. Our day had been going swimmingly, and for a minute we thought swimming might be the only way back on board! We were in shock! In the end we asked the harbour master to ring the captain, and he was more than happy to, because the yacht hadn’t paid its fee for being in the dock. Maybe that’s why it was in such a rush to leave! Once we knew we’d be picked up, we saw the funny side. The yacht turned round and collected us, and the crew did nothing but apologise. It’s a memory I’ll never forget.”

- The sea is still cool in May, so swim stops are refreshing (editorial).

On the plane
- Wear your heaviest items on travel day: coat, knit and your bulkiest shoes. They’d take the most space and weight in your bag.
- Planes can be cold with the air con, so take a jacket on board.
- An inflatable cushion that packs into its own small pouch: a head cushion on the flight, a pillow on the sunbed, and as firm or soft as you like. Try that with a foam neck pillow!

“I use SHEIN and Temu all the time, and I read every review first, especially ones with photos on real people. They show the true quality and material; model shots can mislead. Check the size reviews too. My returns have always been free and easy, so if you’re unsure, order two sizes (check the returns policy first). And order early: delivery can take a while.”

Change your hair, change the look
Swapping my hair from up in the day to down in the evening (or the other way round) gives the whole outfit a different look. Even one piece of jewellery I didn’t wear earlier does the same.

What’s underfoot

- Pebble or sandy beaches
- Stone old-town lanes and steps

Trouble spots
- Polished stone can be slippery
☀ Day shoes
Flat sandals or trainers.
☾ Evening shoes
Block-heel or flat sandals.
✕ Leave at home
Stilettos on stone lanes (editorial).
Season notes: Hot sun around midday: shade and water.
Karen’s tipHeels and cobbles don’t mix. Check the ground before you pack heels: thin heels catch between cobbles, so a wedge or block heel is steadier for evenings.
One pair, day to night: The best space-savers are a sleek waterproof leather ankle boot (Paris, London, Vienna & Prague, Amsterdam, Rome in December), a clean minimalist leather trainer or slip-on loafer (Tokyo, London), and a low block-heel sandal (cruise). Travel day: wear the heavier pair (see On the plane). Break in shoes before the trip.

The 10 kg cabin bag packing list
Your bag: 55 × 40 × 20 cm
Planned for 7 nights with a paid 10 kg cabin bag (55 × 40 × 20 cm, Ryanair’s size) plus the free under-seat bag. The rule that makes it work: wear your bulkiest items on the plane.
Wear on the plane worn
In the bag 14 items
Karen’s tipRoll, don’t fold. I roll my clothes, stuff socks and small bits inside my shoes, and keep socks in a clear bag that comes home full of dirty laundry or wet swimming costumes. How I pack →
Karen’s tipPack a bag in a bag.A shopping bag that folds into its own little pouch, for shopping, dirty laundry and pool towels. No buying bags abroad. Why, and where to get one →
- A heavy coat
- Heels for cobbles
Check your room first
Check the hotel, Airbnb or hostel listing (or ask the host) for:
- Iron or steamer
- Hairdryer
- Toiletries: shampoo, shower gel (conditioner often isn’t supplied)
- Towels, plus beach or pool towels
- Washing machine or laundry service
- Plug adapters or USB sockets
- Kettle, tea and coffee
- Slippers and a robe
- A safe
Here: Most hotels have a hairdryer; check the listing if you need one.
Hostels often don’t provide towels or padlocks.
Every item they provide is one you don’t carry.
No-iron packing
Pick fabrics that don’t crease. Woven cotton and linen crease; knits, merino, jersey and most polyester blends barely do.
- Hang creased clothes in the bathroom while you shower.
- Pack a small crease-release spray under 100 ml (it counts as a liquid).
- Roll clothes, and keep crease-prone pieces in a packing cube on top, not in a vacuum bag.
- Check whether your hotel or Airbnb has an iron.
Buy it there?
A checked bag typically adds around £60–80 return on a budget airline. So if your bag’s full, buying bulky or liquid items when you land is often cheaper.
Think sun cream, full-size shampoo, insect repellent, a beach towel or flip-flops.
Tick items off as you pack (ticks aren’t saved). Liquids rules depend on your departure airport and change from time to time, so check your airport’s current security rules before you decant (see liquids rules by airport).
Flying there on Ryanair, easyJet or Wizz?
FLYMAX Underseat cabin case (45 × 36 × 20 cm)
Its stated size is 45 × 36 × 20 cm, exactly easyJet’s free under-seat maximum of 45 × 36 × 20 cm. easyJet counts the wheels and handles in that, so it’s worth popping a tape measure on it before you go.
Karen: “This is the bag I took to Kos for a week this month.”
- Small-ship cabins have little storage, and bags usually go under the bed, so a soft, squashable bag is far easier than a hard case (editorial; based on typical small-ship pre-departure advice).
- One 10 kg cabin bag plus an under-seat bag is plenty for a week of relaxed clothes; check your flight's allowance, and whether your package includes a hold bag.
Duty-free bag: Buying at the airport? On easyJet one shop bag can usually go on board on top of your bag; on Ryanair and Wizz check your allowance. Gate staff decide, so keep it small. Duty free and your free baggage →
Sizes come from each airline’s official page (links in our free baggage reference). Rules change, so check your booking before you fly.
Baggage picks
Ticks compare each bag’s stated outer size with each airline’s free-bag size; a struck-through name means it’s too big for that airline. Soft bags squash a little, hard cases don’t. Karen has used the easyJet one; we haven’t tested the others yet.

Dates and practicalities
Small-ship life
Dress is casual by day and smart casual in the evening, with no formal nights. Bring soft-soled shoes for the deck, swimwear, a light layer for breezy evenings, and a small day bag for trips ashore (editorial; based on typical small-ship pre-departure advice). (editorial)
Entry requirements
FCDO: you can visit Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. Your passport needs to be less than 10 years old on the day you arrive and valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave. Under the EU Entry/Exit System you may have your fingerprints and photo taken at the border, so allow extra time. Croatia joined the Schengen area in 2023.
What drinks and food cost
We don’t have reliable prices for here yet.
Karen’s tip research food and drink costs before you go and check local apps for happy hours and 2-for-1 offers.
Book your shore trips yourself
“On a cruise, I book my trips with Viator and GetYourGuide. The same trips the ship sells are often half the price, and some guarantee to get you back on time, which is most guests’ number one worry. But in 20 years of cruising and booking my own trips and itineraries, an independent tour has never let me down or made me miss the ship. The savings pay for treats! Take your passport and credit card, just in case.”
Check each tour's own return-to-ship terms before you book.
Getting from the ship into town
“I use Rome2Rio to get from the ship into town: it shows walking, local transport and taxi routes. Basic cruise packages don’t include the shuttles, which can be pricey, so with four of you a taxi might work out cheaper. I always ‘do the maths’!”
Ferry timetables from Split
These are the operators' own timetable pages. Times and fares change by season, so check them before you travel rather than relying on any times you see elsewhere.
- Jadrolinija: local lines (Splitsko okružje): lines from Split to Supetar and Bol (Brač), Stari Grad, Hvar town and Jelsa (Hvar), Vis, Vela Luka (Korčula), Ubli (Lastovo) and Rogač (Šolta)
- TP Line: timetable: catamaran lines from Split to Hvar, Milna (Brač), Korčula (Korčula town and Vela Luka), Lastovo and Dubrovnik
- Krilo: sailing schedule: fast-ferry ports listed include Hvar, Vis, Korčula, Bol, Supetar and Mljet
Checked on the operators' own sites on 20 October 2026. Some lines run only in summer.
Direct flights to Split
Direct routes from airports near the south coast that we could verify on the airport's or airline's own pages. All are seasonal (roughly spring to autumn). No prices here: check the airline.
- Bristol: easyJet: seasonal; Bristol Airport lists Split "up to daily" from late March 2026
- London Gatwick: easyJet: easyJet route page; check dates, as the route is mainly summer
- London Gatwick and London Heathrow: Croatia Airlines: seasonal; Croatia Airlines lists Gatwick to Split from 20 April to 29 October 2026, and Heathrow to Split on Saturdays from 4 April to 24 October 2026 and again from 31 October 2026 to 2 January 2027
Southampton and Bournemouth had no direct Split flights we could find (Bournemouth's own schedule lists Zadar in Croatia, with Ryanair). Other London routes may exist, but we only list routes we verified.
Share the load
- Share one set of chargers, adaptor and toiletries; each of you still gets your own liquids bag allowance.
- Split each person’s outfits across both bags, so a gate-checked bag doesn’t leave one of you with nothing.
General advice from PackToWear.
